Hol Lo Co.

Duration

3 min

Venue

Tai Kwun F-Hall Studio

Ho Lol Co. is a projection mapping project set at Tai Kwun, Hong Kong’s historic cultural landmark. The name, written as 好地道, refers both to a street (as in the animation’s first scene, modelled after a street sign), and phonetically hints at “very local,” with a playful nod to “LOL” and “Co.” as our team/company.

The work transforms Tai Kwun’s brick façade into a vibrant canvas inspired by retro pixel art games. Drawing from Hong Kong’s classic Cha Chaan Teng cafés, the animation depicts a typical day—from morning rush, lunch, teatime, to evening bustle—highlighting the lively and sometimes chaotic bustle of these beloved local eateries. The team members become playful game characters, taking on waitress and chef roles, with our HP bars humorously depleting with each shift.
Hidden among the pixel art scenes are clever visual references to Cha Chaan Teng slang, like “pretty girl” as congee, or “handsome guy” as rice, inviting the audience to spot and decipher these local jargons. Behind the kitchen, a food factory processes these codes into funny, literal meanings.

By merging tradition and modern digital art, Ho Lol Co. presents Tai Kwun as a place not only for history, but for fun, nostalgia, and the spirit of Hong Kong’s everyday life.
